Brisbane City Council has approved a major plan to revamp the dangerous Lindum railway crossing in Wynnum West with a 105 million dollar overhaul. Underground power networks at the site were relocated earlier, and the project aims to address severe safety concerns after the location was flagged for high numbers of near-misses with trains over recent years.

Under the approved design, the crossing will be moved west and positioned perpendicular to the tracks to improve driver sightlines. Traffic through the intersection will then be regulated by traffic lights, while the right-turn movement from Sibley Road onto Kianawah Road will be removed to ease congestion. New shared paths and dedicated bicycle lanes will also be constructed to improve safety for local pedestrians and cyclists.

Funding for the infrastructure upgrade involves an 85 million dollar contribution from the federal government, while both the state government and the city council are chipping in 10 million dollars each. Brisbane City Council infrastructure representative Ryan Murphy said the current layout distracts drivers and creates risks of vehicles accidentally entering the tracks. Queensland Rail data previously listed Lindum among the top ten crossings with the highest number of dangerous near-misses across the network.

The tender for the construction works is expected to open in January following the completion of the final design phase and coordination efforts with Queensland Rail. Officials plan for construction to begin in mid-2027 and reach full completion by the end of 2028.
